How to add Canvas to Google Calendar

Copy the Calendar Feed link from Canvas, add it in Google Calendar under Other calendars, From URL, and due dates stay in sync. What updates and what does not.

Copy the Calendar Feed link from the Canvas Calendar page, then add it in Google Calendar on the web under Other calendars, From URL. That is the whole job, and it takes about five minutes. From then on, your Canvas assignments, quizzes and calendar events appear in Google Calendar next to everything else, and changes arrive on their own.

It works because a feed is a live link, not a file. Downloading a .ics file and importing it once gives you a snapshot that is right today and wrong the week your professor moves the midterm. Subscribing to the link keeps checking back. (Canvas here means Canvas LMS, the learning management system from Instructure.)

  1. Log in to Canvas and open Calendar from the global navigation on the left.
  2. In the sidebar on the right of the calendar, click Calendar Feed.
  3. Canvas shows a long web address in a URL field. Copy all of it.

The feed contains events and assignments from all of your Canvas calendars, so one link covers every course you are enrolled in today.

Treat that link like a password. It is tied to your Canvas account, and anyone who has it can read your course schedule. Paste it into a calendar app and nowhere else.

How do I add it to Google Calendar?

  1. Open Google Calendar in a web browser on a computer. Google does not let you subscribe from the Android, iPhone or iPad app. Once you add the calendar on the web, the app shows it.
  2. On the left, next to Other calendars, click +.
  3. Choose From URL.
  4. Paste the Canvas feed link.
  5. Click Add calendar.

A new calendar appears in the left sidebar, usually named after your school or your Canvas account. You can rename it, change its color and switch it on and off like any other calendar in the list.

Does it update when a due date changes?

Yes, with a delay, and with a few things it never carries.

  • Changed, new and removed items sync on their own. You do not need to subscribe again when a professor moves a date.
  • The update is not instant. Google Calendar checks a subscribed calendar on its own schedule. Google does not publish how often, and there is no button that makes it check now, so a change can take hours to reach you. If an exam moves an hour before class, Canvas or the announcement is still the place to look.
  • The window is fixed. Canvas includes events from the past 30 days and up to 366 days ahead, and up to 1,000 items in total.
  • New courses need the link again. Canvas says that after you enroll in a new course, you add the feed again to include it. Once a term, copy the link again and remove the old calendar.
  • Some things never appear. Canvas To Do items are not in the feed, and neither are announcements, Inbox messages, files or grades. An assignment with no due date has nothing to be placed by, so it is missing too.
  • Nothing flows back. The feed is read only. Deleting the calendar in Google Calendar changes nothing in Canvas, and nothing you do there can submit or change an assignment.

Why is nothing showing up after I subscribe?

The calendar is empty

Give it a few minutes; the first pull can be slow with several courses. If it is still empty after 15 to 20 minutes, check that you copied the whole address, including everything after the last slash. A link that is one character short fails without an error.

One assignment is missing

Old courses are cluttering the calendar

Because the feed only reaches back 30 days, a finished course fades out of it on its own a month after its last event. Until then, switch the Canvas calendar off in Google Calendar's sidebar to hide it without unsubscribing.

Can I do the same on a phone?

Yes. A phone's calendar app can subscribe to the same link, and the Canvas Student app covers what a calendar cannot, such as grades and announcements. Can I add the Canvas calendar from the Google Calendar phone app?

No. Google only allows subscribing to a calendar from a computer web browser. Add the Canvas feed there once and it shows up in the Google Calendar app on your phone.

How often does Google Calendar update a Canvas feed?

On its own schedule, which Google does not publish, and there is no button to make it check sooner. Expect a change in Canvas to take hours rather than minutes. For anything that changed today, check Canvas itself.

Why is my new course missing from Google Calendar?

Canvas says a feed you added before enrolling in a course does not pick that course up. Copy the Calendar Feed link again, add it in Google Calendar, and remove the old copy so nothing shows twice.
