Is this safe with my school account?
Scholarwire for Canvas reads Canvas with the session you are already signed into. No password, no developer key, no approval from your school. At install it can reach only Scholarwire's own site. You grant your school's address from the popup.

No. The requests look like ordinary page loads from your browser, which Canvas logs the way it logs you opening the assignments page. There is no integration for an administrator to approve, review or revoke.

Your Canvas data, notes and study history live on your device; on Pro and the trial, an encrypted copy syncs to your account. The extension sends Canvas there in the background. Tutor messages also carry a summary plus the notes and readings it picks.

If your school runs Canvas and you can sign in to it in Chrome, it works. That covers hosted instances, instructure.com subdomains and self-hosted installs. It does not work with Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace or Google Classroom.
