How to use Scholarwire inside Claude and ChatGPT

You already pay for Claude or ChatGPT. Your semester lives somewhere else, in a separate app you have to open and check. A connector closes that gap: add Scholarwire once, and the assistant you already use can answer from your real courses, read your syllabus and assignment materials, and turn either into flashcards, a quiz or a set of slides, instead of you copying dates and readings back and forth by hand.

What is the Scholarwire connector?

Your semester, inside the assistant you already pay for. Add Scholarwire to Claude or ChatGPT and ask what is due, what you missed, and what to do tonight. It answers from your real courses and your synced course materials, and it can build study material or tick something off. It is not a second tutor: the built-in Tutor inside Scholarwire is unchanged and still runs on Scholarwire's own AI credits. The connector spends your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription instead, so asking it about your semester, or asking it to write you a deck of flashcards, costs you nothing extra here and is not limited by Scholarwire AI credits. The assistant on the other end is the one doing the writing; Scholarwire only stores what it hands back.

The connector reads a semester Scholarwire has already synced from Canvas. You can start free now; connecting Canvas takes the Chrome extension, and it starts the 14-day Pro trial.

What can I ask it to do?

Four kinds of things to ask for:

Read. What is due, what you missed, your notes, your study plan and your grade standing if you share it, answered from your real courses. Try: "Using Scholarwire, what is due in the next three days and what should I do tonight?"

Study material. Flashcards, quizzes, study guides, summaries and slides. Claude or ChatGPT writes the content and this app stores it, so it costs no AI credits here. Try: "Make me 30 flashcards for CPSC 440 from this week's reading." Once they exist, review them the same way as any other deck, with Scholarwire's own spaced repetition. A slide deck it builds shows up as a note with an Export slides button; a quiz it writes can be taken right there in the chat, or later inside Scholarwire.

Changed your mind. It can move any deck, quiz, note or study set to Recently deleted, including a note you wrote yourself. It tells you what would go first and only does it when you say yes, and you can restore it from Recently deleted. Try: "Delete the study set you made for chapter 4."

Course materials. The syllabus, an assignment's instructions, and the readings and pages linked from it, read straight from what Canvas already synced. Try: "What does the syllabus say about late work?" It can also look at one assignment's linked reading directly, for example "What do I need to read for Lab 4?"

Who can use it?

Pro and the 14-day trial, which starts the moment you connect Canvas. Your Claude or ChatGPT plan does not change that: what counts is your Scholarwire account. A Free Scholarwire account cannot connect it. The Scholarwire screen Claude or ChatGPT opens says that using Scholarwire from there is part of Pro and the trial, and nothing is connected.

If a trial ends or Pro is cancelled, the connection stays listed in Settings, Connectors, and every question gets one line saying it is part of Pro and the trial, with no price or countdown attached. The next time the assistant renews its sign-in, it asks you to reconnect. Nothing in your semester is deleted, and once you are on Pro again it answers as before, or after one reconnect if the assistant asked for it.

How do I set it up in Claude?

Start with your connector link. Settings, Connectors in Scholarwire shows it with a Copy button beside it, and so does the welcome setup when you first sign up.

1. Open claude.ai and go to Customize, then Connectors.
2. Click Add custom connector. If you only see a +, click it first.
3. Paste the connector link, leave both detected options as they are, then click Add.
4. Click Connect and sign in on the Scholarwire screen, where you choose what it can see.
5. Open the + button, turn Connectors on for this chat, and ask about your semester.

A free Claude account can add one custom connector at a time. Claude Pro and above can add more. Set it up on a computer or the web; use it anywhere afterward, including the Claude mobile apps once it has been added on web or desktop.

How do I set it up in ChatGPT?

Copy your connector link first, from Settings, Connectors in Scholarwire.

1. Open ChatGPT on the web and go to Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode.
2. Go to Plugins, select the plus button, name it Scholarwire, paste the connector link under Connection, and create it.
3. Sign in on the Scholarwire screen, where you choose what it can see.
4. In a chat, choose Developer mode from the plus menu, pick Scholarwire, and ask about your semester.

Developer mode is on ChatGPT Plus and Pro, on the web. On a school or work account (Business, Enterprise or Edu), it depends on what your admin allows. Free and Go do not have it. On a school or work account, OpenAI's help center puts the switch under Settings, Apps, Advanced settings, and new apps under Settings, Apps, Create.

ChatGPT calls a connector you add this way an app, and it lives on the Plugins page, which replaced the Connectors settings ChatGPT had until 2026. OpenAI's help center says full support for write actions is rolling out to Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro connects with read permissions. On a plan like that, the read tools (what is due, course details, notes) work, and the write tools (building flashcards, quizzes, study guides and slides, booking a study block, marking work done, adding a note, asking for course files to be read) may not. By default ChatGPT asks you to confirm each write before it runs.

What can it do, and what can it not?

It answers questions about your own semester: what is due, what you missed, what a course's grade standing looks like if you turned that on, and what your study plan has scheduled. It can also read the syllabus and the readings linked from an assignment, once those have synced from Canvas. It can build flashcards, a quiz, a study guide, a summary or a slide outline from what you ask for, create a study block, mark an assignment done or not done, and add a note. It can also delete a note, deck, quiz or study set when you ask, and it reports what would go before it removes anything. A deleted note goes to Recently deleted. It cannot see a Canvas link, a full announcement body, a file's raw bytes, an attachment, your email address, your real name, or a score on one specific assignment, and it cannot see any course you have hidden from your planner.

What can it see?

• Your courses, assignment titles, due dates, and whether something is missing or overdue.
• A short excerpt of an announcement, never the full body.
• Your notes. It can search all of them for a word, and it opens one at a time.
• Your study plan for the days ahead.
• The syllabus, an assignment's instructions, and the text of readings and pages linked from it, once those have synced from Canvas. Settings, Canvas shows how many of a course's files are ready.
• Course-level grade standing (a percentage and points, never a single assignment's score), only if you turn on Share my grade standing for that connection in Settings.

It never sees your Canvas address, a Canvas link, a file's raw bytes, a per-assignment grade, your account's encryption key, or anything belonging to another student. Course material text is stored encrypted the same way your notes are, and decrypted only to answer a request you made. Every call is logged on the server, the same way a sync key read already is. Turning off course material syncing in Settings, Canvas deletes the stored text; turning it back on starts fresh.

How do I disconnect it?

Open Settings, Connectors, find the connection by name, and press Disconnect. That removes it immediately: the next thing the assistant tries gets an error asking it to reconnect, and nothing that already synced to your devices is touched or deleted. Signing out of Claude or ChatGPT alone does not disconnect it; use the Disconnect button in Scholarwire for that.

Can I start the chat from Scholarwire?

Once a connection is live, Scholarwire offers to start the chat for you. The Study page grows a "Study in Claude" button beside "New study set", and the New study set dialog grows a small panel, "Do this in Claude instead", with a button for flashcards, a quiz, a practice exam, a study guide and slides. Settings, Connectors puts an Open button on each connection, and the Tutor has a quiet "Ask in Claude instead" link under the message box. Each one opens a new chat in a new tab with the question already written, naming the course you have picked and ending with where to save the result, so the deck or the quiz lands back in Scholarwire rather than scrolling away in the transcript. None of it spends a Scholarwire AI credit: the chat runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan.

A link cannot turn a connector on, which is why every one of those prompts starts with "Using my Scholarwire connector". Claude uses whatever connectors your account has enabled. In ChatGPT, choose Developer mode from the plus menu in the new chat and pick Scholarwire.

What should I try first?

What if a menu name has moved?

The steps above are written from the current Claude and ChatGPT settings pages, and both change on their own schedule. If a menu name here does not match what you see, the idea is the same: add a custom connector, paste a URL, sign in.
